Hello, I’m Safet Kubat

Scientist, researcher, change maker

Safet Kubat, PhD is a scientist and expert in political ecology, sustainability, and digital civic activism. He works at the intersection of academia, citizen science, and public policy, translating complex socio-environmental research into concrete, participatory action.

He is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Geneva (Institute for Citizenship Studies) and earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in 2024 from the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Sarajevo. His doctoral research focused on the identification and operationalization of socio-ecological boundaries linked to the commons as a method for long-term resource preservation at the city level. He has also served as a visiting researcher at the University of Belgrade.

Beyond academia, he is the founder of “Rivers of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Be the Change,” one of the largest ecological movements in the Balkans, bringing together over 62,400 members. Through this platform, he actively connects citizen science, academic research, and digital activism with tangible environmental and social change on the ground.

Safet Kubat is a recipient of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship, supporting his postdoctoral research project:
“Development of a transformative citizen-participatory doughnut model as a potential framework for socio-environmental policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in correlation with Switzerland.”

He is also a former UNESCO Champion of Peace, recognized for his work in fostering positive civic engagement and environmental responsibility through digital platforms.

He has published more than 30 academic and public-facing works, including scientific articles, policy papers, and book contributions.

His work bridges science, policy, and society, offering expertise in research, public communication, strategic consulting, and participatory sustainability models for cities, institutions, and civil society.

You’re one decision away from real change. Be the change.
